Traveling can be a very stressful thing to go through; especially as pin-up girl. So many things to pack but so little room to put everything. On top of that, trying to find something to wear on the plane ride that’s comfortable but also stylish as well can be overwhelming - I asked travel blogger and graphic designer Kitcharat Nartetamrongsutt (Ratt for short) how she maintains her look while traveling and the advice she has for maintaining your look while traveling.
Can you tell me a little bit about yourself? How did you to get into vintage fashion and lifestyle?
“I have always loved vintage fashion - I loved fluffy skirts since I was young. Especially ribbons! (most of my shoes have ribbons) I wear modern vintage to fit with the lifestyle in my country. However, with the encouragement from many other pinups and ‘50s vintage influencers on Instagram, I started to practice how to do vintage hairstyles rather than follow modern hair trends.”
How is it like to be a pinup girl in Thailand? How do people react to the way you dress there?
“Nobody here wears vintage fashion. They wear vintage-bohemian style rather than pinup. Vintage fashion is so extravagant looking. People look at me like: Oh! where are you going? Are you going to a party? But I also seem to get many compliments as well.”
How Is the pinup/vintage community there? Is it common to dress the way do you do? Or is it still quite uncommon?
“There is no community here, and it’s still uncommon.”
You travel often and even have a blog about it. What’s your advice for maintaining a vintage/retro look while traveling?
“My advice is to plan ahead. Wear the same accessories and pair them with many dresses. Red lipstick and a petticoat is a must-have for me. Also, take everything you need such as petticoats, fluffy dresses, accessories, shoes etc. Separate them into many bags inside your luggage. (Don’t forget to ask the receptionist for an iron to keep your dress neat and beautiful!)
What's your advice for dressing in vintage fashion?
“In my opinion, for pinup fashion, you need to put your love and passion into it. You need to understand that people think differently. I've tried to understand people have a different preference. Remember that pinup and vintage is one kind of fashion no need to be shy or feel awkward. Just dress the way you want. “
What icons from the past or (present) inspire you the most?
“I’m mostly inspired by @iddavanmunster because she always travels with a beautiful vintage dresses. @avaelderwood She is classy and glamorous in her own style. @missalba.banana She is the real-life time traveller vintage fashion from the past. I really adore her movement and her dress. Elizabeth Taylor is my only idol from the past who I adore. You cannot resist her powerful eyes!”
“What’s your advice for Asian pinups (or just pinups in general) who want to start wearing pinup fashion?
“You need to have confidence in yourself. I used to be the one who cared about everybody’s opinions. But that will lead you to be who people want you to be and not who YOU want to be. I don't care if people don't understand me or not. I do, and that’s all that matters.”
What’s been your experience in the pinup community so-far?
“I really love the community even though I cannot participate in any kind of event because most of them are outside my country. I always connect with the community on IG. I follow some and some follow me. I found many nice women in this community. Maybe someday I can go and join others outside my country.”
Any up and coming projects we can look forward to?
“I will bring pinup dresses to Vietnam and Taiwan this year!”
