Should We Really Boycott Pinupgirlclothing?

I know I'm late on this PUG drama, but I wanted to still write this article for women such as myself who aren't in the know. I was scrolling through my Instagram, when I saw a post with the hashtag "Boycott Pinup Girl Clothing," I clicked on it, then did a little research of my own. Basically, a brand called 'Pinup Girl Clothing' launched a collection called Chinese New Year and people found it offensive, stating that it was appropriating Asian culture. The colors and print they used in the line actually symbolize death and bad luck.

I know I'm late on this PUG drama, but I wanted to still write this article for women such as myself who aren't in the know. I was scrolling through my Instagram when I saw a post with the hashtag "Boycottpinupgirlclothing," I clicked on it then did a little research of my own. Basically, a brand called 'Pinup Girl Clothing' launched a collection called "Chinese New Year" and people found it offensive, stating that it was appropriating Asian culture. Resulting in the hashtag: "Boycottpinupgirlclothing." Due to pin-ups in the past being predominantly white, I think now more than ever we need models of every race to encourage women of all races to start dressing in pinup fashion. Representation matters - I’m not saying that people of other races can’t wear something that’s in Asian culture, I’m just saying they could have used more Asian models. I mean, there are tons of Asian pin-ups in the community, why not get more of them to model for you? Although, I don't think we should boycott them and I don't think they tried to offend anyone. I mean, what good would that do for their brand if they knew it would cause so much backlash? I highly doubt they would have launched the line, I think It's just a case of a lack of research on their part.

First of all, let me just say, I love this picture. It was an empowering moment for me and I will always cherish it. What I am not down with, is a certain CEO (I'm looking at you, Laura) trying to use said picture as a smoke screen or at the very least as a joke or jab given the events of the last few weeks. This picture was taken in February of 2016 and posted in March of 2016, and she actually went back recently and added these hashtags #boycottpug #boycottpinupgirlclothing on the repost she had on her page. What was her intention? Who knows. Was she trying to deflect, taunt, make fun... I'm not sure why anybody would go back to an old post and add hashtags that had nothing to do with the photo at the time of taking it. I am not your negro, I am not your token. Please don't use me to "prove you're not racist". I will not help you in that way. You have others that are happy to oblige in that area. I am not the one.
